I’m Ryan Conlan, an experience designer focused on ecosystems, technology, and how we learn.

I aim to leave the world better than I found it.

I design products, build websites, animate and edit video, map audiences and understand technical systems, translate fragmented ideas into clear hierarchies and lucid narratives, and think about how the tools we use color our experience.

My goal is to help expand our sense of self and place by synthesizing ideas across domains, collaborating with teams enabled through empathy and mentorship, and building shared, cross-functional understanding.

Chapters

Colorful music band buttons on a chest strap

Co-founded SonicLiving, the first music-based social network and concert recommendation engine.

Social graphs, proximity, and listening habits (via iTunes, Pandora and Last.fm) enabled us to introduce people to new music and friends along the way. Here’s a Wired write up from 2007. Acquired in 2012.

2005–12

Product design

Mitsubishi sports car under a purple to red gradient

Digital design + programming with Deutsch LA.

My first foray into corporate ad land. It tasted funny. Websites and banners for Mitsubishi, Old Navy, Coors Light and TGI Friday's.

2004–05

Interactive design, animation, programming

Co-founded Cloudforge, a web design and development studio.

We specialized in web design, flash, eCommerce and RIAs. Early ed-tech platform Lynda.com was our key client.

2003–05

Design, development

Orange dot logo of ArtCenter College of Design

I dreamt of cars, film and 3D animation, but fell in love with interactive design at the dawn of the web.

I shifted from Illustration to the nascent New Media program, steeped in design and business fundamentals, ventured into physical product and packaging design, geeked out with early 3D printers and vintage NASA milling machines, and helped form the Art Center Student Government.

1995–99

Design, development, animation, illustration, fabrication

I’m excited to work on anything that expands our shared sense of the world, and of ourselves—especially digital, physical, musical, educational, immersive experiences that amplify creativity and build community.
